Little White Lies

When I was 14, I started reading EMPIRE, believing that from it, my pub quiz knowledge of film would stem into a deeper understanding of cinema. "Oh yes," thought I blindly, "must get to know more about Spielberg and the Oscars... everyone else likes them, I should too." Little did I know that EMPIRE introduced me only to that which we cinephiles refer to politely as 'blockbusters' and did not delve deeper into the unknown recesses of the cinematic universe. I soon found out that EMPIRE cared more about Oscar than it did about the cultural welfare of average Joe.

A few years later, and by this time I picture my cinematic receptors covered in cobwebs and dust, a new mag came into my life. Cue LWL magazine- zesty, independent, so far uncorrupted, gives one interesting ARTICLES... articles! not only reviews. Move aside Delia, Nigella just came into my life.

LWL enriches an enthusiasm for film, helping our understanding by providing us with different historical and cultural backdrops (and very nice layouts including artsy fartsy pictures); it puts a book of yellow pages underneath the feet of those films which are not pumelled onto the eardrums of the public by mass media; it aims not to form the opinion of the film-viewer but invites the film-viewer to form an opinion based upon its wise proverbs; it dares to criticise Oscar nominees.

In other words, if EMPIRE is the Bible... we've found our ten commandments, and they're fresh upon the well-formatted headstones which are the pages of LittleWhiteLies.
